Jake Sullivan, nominated by US President-elect Joe Biden for the post of national security adviser, also called for the immediate release of Navalny. According to Sullivan, «Kremlin attacks on Navalny – not just a violation of human rights, but also an insult to Russians who want their voices to be heard».

The release of Navalny was demanded by Senator Bernie Sanders, who stressed that the United States should show solidarity with those who fight corruption and work for the good of democracy around the world..

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, made a similar statement.

«The politicization of the judicial system is unacceptable; Mr. Navalny’s rights must be respected, – said in a statement by the EU High Representative. – We also call on the Russian authorities to immediately release all journalists and citizens who have been detained for reporting on Mr Navalny’s return or expressing support for him. These detentions confirm the continuing negative trend towards shrinking space for opposition, civil society and independent expression in the Russian Federation.».

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the indignation of Western countries over the detention of Navalny is an attempt to divert the attention of their citizens from internal problems.

Muscovites interviewed by a Reuters correspondent express different opinions about Navalny. So, according to Yuri Elizarov, returning to Russia, Navalny acted as a real person should have done, however, from a political point of view, this may have been a mistake, since in the coming years there will hardly be any changes in Russia..

Mikhail Khodorkovsky expressed the opinion that the arrest of Navalny – attempt «aging autocrat» prove that he is still in charge.

According to him, if the West wants to influence the Kremlin after Navalny’s arrest, then it is necessary to act, not speak. Khodorkovsky added that it is necessary to impose sanctions on people involved in the expansion of the Russian network of corrupt money around the world, and not on «Nord Stream – 2».

«The arrest of Navalny means that the bandit regime of Putin is switching to totalitarian methods of pressure on society», – Khodorkovsky told Reuters in London.
