How Ukraine’s health care system is struggeling with COVID-19 | Coronavirus Update
Vaccination of Ukrainians is planned to be carried out in three stages, starting from January 2021
The state must determine who will be vaccinated first and how many patients the hospital will be able to admit per month, and most importantly – help healthcare facilities with vaccinations. This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at a conference call on the situation with the spread and counteraction of the COVID-19 pandemic..
As the press service of the leader of the Ukrainian state reported on December 7, the President «keeps under control the preparation for the purchase of a vaccine against the coronavirus infection COVID-19 and for the mass vaccination of Ukrainians».
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal said that over the past week, the number of cases of COVID-19 has dropped significantly. In general, from November 30 to December 6, 89 322 patients were identified. For comparison – the week before last, their number was 96,936.
According to Shmygal, these indicators were influenced by the introduction of weekend quarantine, as well as tougher fines for staying without masks in public places and transport..
According to the Center for Public Health, according to the Government portal of the executive authorities, as of December 7, 8641 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Ukraine; among the sick –
390 children and 284 health workers. Recall that last week, more new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease were recorded in the country per day; so, on December 4, 15131 cases were recorded.
Three stages of vaccination in Ukraine
In an interview with LIGA.Life, acting Head of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Igor Kuzin said that vaccination against coronavirus in the country will take place in three stages. He noted that, according to preliminary information, Ukraine may receive the first batch of vaccine in the middle or at the end of January 2021..
«Now there are two parallel lines. The first – negotiations on COVAX, this initiative has brought together almost all countries in the world. […] This will be a trial launch batch, so that the state will not only show its logistics capabilities, but so that we can work out all the logistics issues of vaccine delivery, cold chain provision, vaccination campaign and so on.», – Kuzin emphasized.
Doctors and Police – among the first
The head of the Ukrainian Institute for Public Policy and Consulting, Serhiy Bykov, notes that medical workers, doctors, employees of the national police and the border service will be the first to be vaccinated in Ukraine..
«They will get the vaccine first. A logistics center for vaccination is being prepared in Kiev, said the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko.», – Sergei Bykov told the correspondent of the Russian Service «Voices of America».
Other categories of citizens, he said, can receive the vaccine in the prescribed manner..
«At the same time, if we look at the rules already published by some airlines, then a certificate that there is a vaccination will be mandatory for a number of flights.», – emphasizes Bykov.
«Today there is no information about what kind of vaccine we will exactly buy, but I think the efficacy of the drug is important, not the country of origin.», – the interlocutor of the Russian service is convinced «Voices of America».
COVID-19 spread estimates
Executive Director of the Center for Applied Policy Research «Penta» Alexander Leonov notes that during the entire period of the pandemic in Ukraine there was no stable testing of citizens for coronavirus infection.
«The testing rate ranges from thirty to seventy thousand per day. This obviously does not provide a scientific understanding of the general picture of the spread of the coronavirus. The authorities are trying to imitate violent activity. And in general, since the beginning of the announcement of quarantine measures, there was no scientific model in the country to assess the situation in order to understand under what criteria a lockdown is introduced, and under what – not», – asserts Leonov.
The political scientist notes that the first strengthening of quarantine measures in Ukraine took place in the spring, when the virus was just beginning to spread.
«And the country came out of lockdown – with a thousand new cases of the disease a day, and there was no reason to say that the first wave ended in the spring», – states the head of the Center for Applied Political Research.
According to him, there are promises in the country to vaccinate, but without explaining which vaccine will be used and in what quantities it will be used..
«There are promises – that certain categories of the population will be vaccinated, but there is no plan or strategy to manage the situation. Choosing a vaccine – this is also an interesting question. You may need a lot of vaccines, and at a certain stage you need to hurry, because when all the volumes in the world are contracted, there will be nowhere to get it.», – emphasizes Alexander Leonov.
